A recent study published in theInternational Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolismfound that eating fast food after a workout has the same effects on restoring the body's glycogen—a carbohydrate that stores and supplies energy—as drinking Gatorade or eating a protein bar. Excuse me while I, along with the rest of the fast food lovers of the world, go run a giant victory lap (which ends at McDonald's, obviously).

Research took place at the University of Montana, where a group of 11 male cyclists were put to the test. After a 90-minute glycogen-depleting ride, cyclists were given a four-hour period in which to recover. Cyclists were fed immediately after the ride and then again two hours later. Following the first ride and recovery period, researchers sent cyclists on a timed 20-kilometer ride, followed by another four-hour recovery period.

After analyzing muscle biopsies and blood samples taken in between the rides, researchers noticed that there were no differences in blood glucose and insulin response, glycogen recovery or performance during the timed trial between those subjects who were served sports supplements such as Gatorade, and those who consumed fast food items including hamburgers, french fries and hash browns. Moral of the story, if you find yourself craving your drive-thru favorites after a long workout, go for it.

But hold up; before you supersize your order, researchers want you to know that portion control was key throughout the study.
